The Pacific Ramosus; Family: Muricidae; species: Chicoreus Ramosus; Genus: Murex (Rock Shells). Range. Indo-Pacific from the Indian Ocean east across the northern shores of Australia/New Zealand and north along the China Sea to just south of the Japanese Sea. The Ramosus (sometimes called the Branch Murex)is a common shell but popular among crafters and shell collectors. It prefers coral reef areas, where as a carnivore (meat eater) feeds on other shell creatures. The Ramosus is a heavy shell has a low spire and inflated body. It has 3 varices that may have one or two knobby vertical ribs. Each varices and the siphonal canal have short , frilled spines. Fine spiral ridges cover all whorls (one complete turn around the shell body). The outer lip has sawtooth edge and toward its lower end a more distinct tooth. The columella is smooth. The shell color is white with brown ridges and blotches. The columella (central pillar of the gastropod visible within the aperture (front opening of the shell) is pink.
